Any of several species of butterfly in the same family (Nymphalidae) as the tortoiseshells. The red admiral Vanessa atalanta, wingspan 6 cm/2.5 in, is found worldwide in the northern hemisphere. It either hibernates, or migrates south each year from northern areas to subtropical zones.
